Hair Trim Ramble

My good friend Carmelita (you may remember her from this post) recently texted me some update hair pictures (she lived in TX now *tear*) of her straightened hair:
As I oohed and aaahed over her progress, I responded thru text “WOW, ur hair looks healthy and long!”  And I wasn’t just saying that to be flattering, I really love her length!  As I stared at it…I realized she is about the same length I was back in May, just below APL.  And I still think it is long!  That got me to thinking…I’m going to go ahead and “big” trim my perimeter hair a little sooner than I originally thought.  I think my hair will look fuller, healthier and it’ll still be long!
So, my plan is to trim back up to APL.  I may be slightly longer than I anticipate because my roots were not fully straightened in these pictures, but here is the general idea of what I want to do:
I think it’s about 2-2.5″ that will go, so basically I’m cutting all the retention I have had since May.  Again my hair isn’t completely straight and the ends are fanned out in the second picture, but I think its a pretty accurate idea of what the end result will be.  I realllllllly wanted to reach BSL this year…but *le sigh* I’m tired of obsessing about my ends.  And as I’ve realized, with my length falling just below APL – My hair will still be long!  And I won’t have to feel the rough ends, have all the lil tangles I get now at the ends, be afraid to wear my hair straight because I’m not sure how it will look…I’m just ready!
Now…the question is, will I wait until I touchup to trim?  So my hair will be nice and straight?  I’m leaning towards yes, but you know how it is when you get it in your head to do something – you wanna do it NOW!  I think after a fresh relaxer will give me the best results, but I’m so ready to do it.  We’ll see.
Also, here is another big revelation:  I’m going to trim the back much more blunt.  The sides will still be on a slant obviously and the back won’t be a 180 degree straight line but it will be way less “u” shape than I have right now.  I’ve been wanting to get rid of my layers for a while now and I think that will help my ends to look thicker also.  Soooooo, there are my thoughts regarding my ends and upcoming trim!
WHADDAYATHINK????  Feedback and advice please!

I think you should wait until your next relaxer if you want to trim, that way your hair will be straight and you’ll have time to think about it

I agree with My Healthy Hair Journey…wait until your next touch up to trim. Look at it like starting from scratch..like a fresh start.

Either way, I say do what is best for your hair. Long hair is no fun if you have jank ends. Your hair will grow and you definitely have the tools to ensure that you’ll retain whatever you grow. You already know what you need to do so do it! :)

I suggest you to wait for your next relaxer because your hair will be sthraighter and you also could take a picture before cutting it just to see how long it would have been… Good luck!

I’ve got issues with trimming in general so I say nooooooooo! Wait until the next relaxer at least.

why don’t you wait till you get to your goal length then as you trim to maintain, you will thicken up the ends?

i gave my hair a massive trim, thinking just like you — cut to the thicker part and then my hair will grow in thick. those thin ends are damaged ends. but then, the very next day, i started to notice that my hair grew in at different rates. now my hair has those thin ends again, but now i know that it’s literally my hair growing at different rates. knowing that, i miss the length i cut off.

I’m with pretty much everyone else; I’d say wait until your next relaxer to trim. Your hair will be straighter then and you’ll be able to better judge how much you want to take off.

I’m going to have to agree with everyone else. After you relaxer would be the best time to trim. This is my plan…I know I could use a good trim but I’m holding out.
