Reader Q: What are the benefits of doing a clear rinse?

One of the questions I received last month was in regards to the clear rinse I did on my hair.  I mentioned briefly in this wash day update that I used the Jazzing Clear Rinse and subsequently a reader asked what its benefits were.  I think it is a great question and recorded a video last week explaining the difference.  I have to always remember that not all of my lovely blog followers also subscribe to my YouTube channel and vice versa; I always try to make sure I give out all pertinent information to both parties, but sometimes I miss the boat.  So here are are the benefits of clear rinses:
  • Revitalize your hair color (if you have semi, demi, or permanent hair color). Safe to use on top of color treated hair to give your hair a boost. Also can help prevent fading.
  • Silkens your hair and therefore reduces the friction co-efficient between the strands which potentially means less damage and breakage
  • Protects against harsh weather environment (extreme cold, hot or dry)
  • Corrects your porosity: Temporary clear or colored rinses also contain proteins that bind to and patch up the hair shaft. This is especially helpful if your hair is over porous.
  • Reduces frizz: because it binds to the hair cuticle, it seals the strand therefore reducing frizz.
  • Locks in moisture: if your moisture/protein balance is on point, it is helpful to do a clear rinse after a moisturizing deep condition to lock in moisture. Again, because clear rinses seal the cuticle it helps prevent moisture from escaping.
I should mention that not only are there clear rinses, there are also glazes and cellophane treatments.  I will be trying a few different brands over the next few months and plan to eventually do a comparison between them.

Just watched the vid. I really like the point you made about using it after the relaxer as well as using the rinse as a method to seal in moisture. My interest is definitely peaked! Off to amazon.com…

I saw the Aveeno one at Target today and almost purchased it. It was on clearance for $6 and some change. I got it all the way to the counter and decided not to get it b/c I couldn’t find any reviews anywhere on that brand. I’m thinking about trying one next month while I’m in between my DC change. I don’t want to introduce too many new things in my regimen at once.

I didn’t see many reviews either, and the ones I saw were on Ulta and everybody’s expectations were different. We’ll see how I like it, I’ll definitely keep you updated.

I’ve been using Jazzing to color my hair for years. I had no idea there were so many benefits to it. I just got my relaxer today and kind of wish I asked for a clear rinse. I wanted to wait until my next relaxer to bring the burgundy hair color back into my life. Learned something new for the future. Thanks!

how often can you use a clear rinse..and is there a certain type of shampoo needed to rinse out?

Excellent question. As Blutiful said, it is applied after you shampoo and deep condition. It will rinse out on its own over the next few washes so it isn’t anything that has to be removed with a special shampoo. I plan to rinse once per month. Thanks for your comment!

You don’t rinse it out with shampoo. You shampoo then use it. I know the Aveeno directions say to shampoo, DC, then put in the clear rinse. There area my people who shampoo, clear rinse, then DC. I think they said it make the shine last longer.
