I’m enjoying wearing my u-part wig, but I miss having weekly wash updates and new styles to share with you! However, the wig is giving me a much needed break from weekly rollersetting. Am I the only one who wants something as low maintenance as possible in the hotter months? Ever since I was about 10 years old, I’ve been doing some form of long-term protective style in the summer – box braids, cornrow extensions, sew-in weaves or wigs.
My new u-part wig should be here any day now from Exotic Hair LA (the 20% off sale is still on I believe with the code: summer). The owner pasted the photo on Facebook, and upon seeing it I got SUPER extra hype! I sent her the above pic of Kelly Rowland as inspiration and doggone if that wig does not look just like it! Whatcha think? I am considering sewing it down to make it like a net weave. Are you familiar with that term? Basically its the same exact thing as a regular sew in except instead of the wefts being sewn to your hair and the net, the tracks are only sewn to the net. The alleged advantage is that it places less stress on your hair. I’ve never had one, but I love the idea of it being sewn down for a few reasons. The wig is curly so I intend to flexirod my “leave out” to blend with the extensions. The best blending is when you roll your hair WITH the extensions, so having the hair sewn down would give me an opportunity to do that for a more natural finish. If I do sew it down, I’m going to actually have my hair braided by a professional in a circle pattern. I also will only sew down the front and leave the back with combs so that I can lift the back to moisturize, apply my growth aid, and seal regularly. I describe my wig regimen in detail in the L4L Healthy Hair Handbook, but as I wear it of course, I’ll update you here.
I’m also considering getting a sew in for the last part of the summer into early fall. We’ll see. As part of the Bangin & Swangin Challenge, I’m hoping all this protective styling pays off. *fingers crossed* I guess for right now I’m just in a weave state of mind! lol. This is exactly what I mean when I say I protective style as the spirit hits me instead of forcing myself to do it in order to race to my length goals faster. I’m feeling wiggy, so I’m going with it. In any event, this fall I will be returning to my beloved rollersets. I am planning to incorporate another challenge…not quite like the past one, but something that challenges us to get creative with our styling! I’m a fervent believer in having fun with our hair whilst on this wonderful ride towards healthy, long hair, so I’m definitely going to push us all to enjoy what we have, regardless of where we are on our journeys.
