Best Hair of the 2012 BET Awards

Secret:  I absolutely love award shows.  Ever since I was a little girl, my family and I would gather around the television for once in a lifetime memorable performances.  The Grammy’s and the American Music Awards were so competitive and coveted back then!  Then came along the ratchet Source and Vibe awards, which I watched solely because they were all Black and had more of an interest to me.  Finally BET began their own award shows and say what you want but I think they do an amazing job.  It KILLS me how badly people down the award show…like do you not watch others?  The audio this year was absolutely horrible at the Grammy’s – and am I the only one who remembers Celine Dion being so pissed about the sound when she was singing her tribute to Luther Vandross that she yanked both earpieces out of her ear at the Grammy’s?  And please lets not talk about “coonery” – the fools on the MTV Music Awards are the most attention seeking baffoons out!  I’m just sayin.  Yes, the BET Awards has its share of issues but if you love award shows the way I do…in comparison to the others, they do a great job.  The light engineering was amazing last night, its a live show, plus although the censorship gets very annoying – other shows simply make you change your song.  At least the artists get to perform it the way they wrote it at the BET Awards!!!  I mean, can’t we be happy we have an award show?  Because I remember all too clearly when we didn’t.  My two cents.

Anywhooo, now that I’ve ended that rant, let’s get into the best hair of the night!!!

Tatyana Ali:  I’m not sure if she cut her real hair – in my mind I’m hoping it is a weave – but either way it looks amazing!  Even though I have always loved her hair, her entire look to me was always forgetable and this slightly asymmetrical bob gives her just enough edge but is still completely feminine.  I lust for the shine and body too!

La La:  Oh the fashionista bloggers on Twitter were slaying her for the outfit choice (which I actually liked) but honey I live for her sleek fishtail braid! Everybody is doing the side braid but I loved the simplicity of this look:  a mid-height ponytail with a lone braid slung over one shoulder.  *sigh* I can’t wait til my hair gets long enough to do that!

Yolanda Adams:  Always a beautiful woman, I remember when Ms. Adams stayed with box braids.  Last night she stepped it way up with a very funky auburn bob curled to perfection!  The gospel performance was one of my favorite of the night but I must admit her hair was completely stealing the show for me.

Chante Moore:  First let me just say this – Chante KILT (not killed but kilt) her rendition of Donna Summers’ Bad Girls.  Seriously.  I felt like an old woman but I immediately yelled “That’s right Chante, show these young girls how its done honey!”  Add to that her chisled physique, gorgeous bronzed skin and then the perfect mass of curly, textured big hair and I die!!!  I want all of that.  On my body.  Right. Now. Simply gorgeous!!!  In fact…I think this may be inspiration for my next weave!

Monica:  Mo is always hit and miss for me with the hair but last night it was a complete hit all the way around.  Although she always sounds amazing, her heartfelt performance had me shouting Hallelujah!, but only inside as I didn’t want to miss a moment of her song.  Her multi-animal-print high low dress was very nice but again, the hair for me stole the show!  The sides were sleek and the bun was full and just messy enough – perfection.  Go on Mo!

Mariah:  Her post-twin-Jenny-Craig body looked curvy and great last night, but when she stepped on stage my first thought was now THAT’S the Mariah I like to see.  Although some may say its predictable, when it works, it works.   Honey blonde down-to-there hair flipped gently backwards to form long layers – it is quintessential Mariah and I love it.  Every single hair was laid in its place and if I were ever to be bold enough to wear a colored wig, that’s what I’d want it to look like!
OMG Girls:  Its not an easy feat to make colored hair look good, but these girls’ stylist – who I believe is celebrity stylist Gabrielle Corney – made it happen.  I love the mix of colors used within one head – like the pink isn’t completely monotone, there are different shades all throughout.  The texture was also great and those girls danced their lil butts off.  Am I the only one who wonders how they toss and flip their hair so hard without becoming dizzy?  Anywhooo, I wish the fool guy who does Nicki Minaj’s wigs would take note – this is how colored hair should look!

Beyonce:  Let me first say this – I am a fan, but definitely not a stan of Queen Bey.  In fact, I’ve been less of a fan ever since her music left R&B and went pop but that’s a story for another day.  However, she looked amazing last night, leaving behind all hundred and fifty ill-fitting mermaid style gowns and stepping into a gorgeous, leg revealing yellow dress topped with a head full of golden blonde beach waves.  The texture was big and messy, giving her a look that appeared effortless and natural.  And the color compliments her skin tone exceptionally well.  Lovely Mrs. Carter!

Rocsi:  Is it just me or did she turn it ALL the way up last night?  For the first time, I actually tuned into the pre-show and Rocsi was serving on the red carpet – I need to know her workout plan ASAP!  By far the best part of her look was her waist length hair that looked suspiciously like the new Bikini by Angela Simmons for Indique hair extensions.  It was so full, flawlessly blended, and looked as if she literally just walked off an exotic beach into her dress and onto the red carpet.  Even she knew it was fiyah because as Terrance J introduced her she turned her back to the camera and gave her hair a very sexy shake!  Pssst…have you been watching YouTube videos, Rocsi?  You know that’s how we love to show off our weave! lol!

Chaka Khan:  Definitely one of my top ten hair crushes of all times, Ms. Khan did not disappoint last night as she strutted her new body onstage in a form fitting gold frock.  Her hair color, as always, was a divine mix of burgundy and deep red in a natural and full blown out texture.  It was full of movement and body as she shut it down belting out her and Whitney Houston’s classic hit, I’m Every Woman.  For me, Chaka can do no wrong with her hair! Lve!!!
Those are my picks for the top ten best heads of hair at the 2012 BET Awards.
What say you, agree or disagree?

Chante and Bey look ah-mazing!! Every time I say I won’t color my hair any more, I see pics like those that make me want to go and dig up that bleach I know I have lying somewhere. Chaka Khan looks fab too. Her dress is to die for!!

I agree with your opening thoughts on the awards, Ebony. Many people complain about the BET Awards but that does not stop them from watching them for 2+ hours. Like you, I’m glad that the recognition is in order, because there was a time when we did not have that. And yes, every awards show has those “cut up” moments. MTV is notorious for theirs. Anywho…

I like the hair wins you chose, especially Yolanda Adams and Monica. Monica’s updo was very chic and sophisticated, very fitting for the occasion! And her performance of I Love the Lord brought tears to my eyes!

    Great post!

I didn’t watch the awards but I the only thing I don’t like about the BET awards is I feel as though there should be some semblance fo a dress code. Call me old fashion but I hate it when the select few decide to show up with the pants sagging- I feel like it undermines the entire night. Really?! These people are too old for that. But anywhoo, I’m not feeling the OMG girls hair. Call me old fashion again- but there is something about colored hair that I can’t get with. And by colored I mean pink, blue, gree, purple, orange. However, you did point out one thing that I would have never noticed and that’s the “blending” of the colors- that does make it better.

Good point about the dress code, but I don’t feel that’s limited to the BET awards is my point. On the VMA’s ppl do the most, wearing the most revealing things ever. And lil wayne wore those ridiculous girlie tights! Very true about colored hair but I completely think its age appropriate. Like the OMG Girlz vs. Nicki Minaj/Lil Kim, grown women shouldn’t be doing it. I’d so much rather they dress like that then overly sexy.
