Celeb Hair Talk: TWA (teeny weenie afro) – Who wears it best?

With all of the support given to women who’ve decided to end their days of relaxing their hair, I feel that saying anything negative about natural is seen as an attack or something even deeper.  And I know this is an unpopular opinion before I even say it, but I’ll be real with you – I hate about 75% of TWAs.  I really just don’t find short, cropped afros attractive or feminine on most women.  I will gladly support and encourage those who’ve bravely decided to chop it all off, but I usually am just excited to see where their hair will go from that basic starting point.  Seeing their freshly cut curls makes me say “Oooh pretty” even while the actual style doesn’t.  And the round shape that results from doing a big chop as opposed to gradually trimming just makes it worse.  I mean, look at China’s hair (celeb stylist on LA Hair) to the left…ya’ll tell me, does that look GOOD to you?! I wanted to snatch that stupid bow out each and every scene of the show! lol!  Now, that being said – there are quite a few celebs who rock a TWA regularly and lots of women love the look on them.  So, you tell me – who wears their TWA the best?

Wanda Sykes
I do love her texture and color!
Solange Knowles
Even after Solange’s defensive Twitter rant, I still maintain that the look needs polishing, although I have never voiced my opinion one way or the other until now.
Kimberly Elise
Okay Kim’s hair is not technically a ‘teeny’ afro, right?  But I loveeeee her curls!  Simply love it!
Viola Davis
I do prefer this look over her wigs hands down but I’m looking forward to seeing her style evolve as it grows a bit longer.
Bre Scullark
This woman can do no wrong in my eyes!  I lovvvvvvveeeeeeed her on America’s Next Top Model, adored her hair and was shocked to see her cut it off.  But it appears to be growing back nicely from the rare updated photos I happen to catch.  I’m a true fan of her hair, no matter how she rocks it.
For those who are unfamiliar or don’t recognize her from Ambi or Garnier Fructis commercials, here is a shot of her hair before it was cut:
Well, I think it is quite apparent who my favorite is, have your say!

I’m sorry but after seeing this month’s Essence I’m going for Jill Scott as my write in

True, Jill Scott is radiant on the cover!

I wanted to snatch those bows out of Chyna’s head but for different reasons. I couldn’t stand that chick! Anyway I love Bre too. Even when she poured that girl’s Red Bull down the sink lol!

China was a trip wasn’t she?!

I can’t stand TWAs with accessories like that bow in Chyna’s hair. It looks ridiculous most of the time. Bre’s fierceness factor went up 50 points for me with her short cut. & Viola looks younger ricking her TWA than with her wigs.

    • http://www.blogger.com/profile/00502925126089404654 Ebony CPrincess

LOL @ ridiculous! I agree Viola looks much younger and better with her real hair than those wigs, so so so true!

I have to agree with wanting to snatch out Chyna’s bows. Her TWA looked nice without the accessories. And I am a big Bre fan too, so I’m definitely loving how she’s rocking the TWA. She’s such a gorgeous girl.

Jill Scott was rocking the heck outta that TWA on the Essence cover, though! I was swooning over her look this AM!

Girl. Those bows KILLED me every.single.time! True at Ms. Jilly from Philly!

I thought Bre was pretty with her hair, but with her twa she’s stunning! I think most people look good with hair but not everyone can look good without it.

Interesting, I love her long big hair best! I agree though she is stunning!

As a natural, I never had a TWA, I grew my hair out to about 3 or 4 inches with weaves and braids, but I have to agree with Solanges rant, it’s just hair, and you are pretty much damned if you do and damned if you dont when it comes to natural hair. People either praise you or down you. To me all the things that people said just remind me that people still aren’t comfortable with natural hair it’s it’s natural state, combing my natural hair does nothing….NOTHING period, it goes right back to it’s same position for me. So i feel Solange, she can wear it how she wants, but at the end of the day that confidence comes from a different place, and it’s not on top of her head.

People have so many opinions on others hair, and either way I could care less whats going on with someones else’s hair in the manner that Solange speaks of. I totally side with her on that. I have friend that had been talked about like a dog because they went and shaved their hair off to start fresh, people would have rather saw them balding from perms and Dominican blowouts then starting over. I mean she literally had a balding patch on top and she said to hell with it and started over There was no way around it. My friend even went in on the girl, I thought it was pretty sad, she looked great to me, and since it was new, people just didn’t care for it. I meet women all the time who had no hair, and i’m like okay, you are rocking that well. I don’t know I love playing in my hair, i love different styles but I have gotten over the fact that my hair shrinks no matter HOW long it is when it’s natural. I’ve never felt this feminine in my life, then again, I feel feminine even if I have braids up in a bun like I do right now, or if i have a twist out, or if i washed it and left the house. I think it’s just something that forced me to think differently of myself and how i look without the hair. I’ve been natural 3 times but I’ve never actually done my hair more thank braids like I did this time around. So instead of typing a novel, I’m gonna say that Whoever this Chyna woman is she needs to take those adornments out her hair, she looks like a preschooler, and I love all the TWA’s posted simply because the women wearing them are beautiful regardless of their hair.

Thanks for your response girl. I can definitely agree that I don’t really understand why people feel compelled to voice their opinion on someone else’s hair. I didn’t even know people were criticizing Solange until she ranted about it. I mean, no I don’t like this particular look of hers but tweeting her about it never even entered my mind. I did feel her when she said she never signed up to be THE spokesmodel for natural hair.

I love Bre as well. Great blog and I am so glad that I came across it. I am now a follower. Stop by and say hello. http://www.thesexysinglemommy.com

This is why I rock with you Ebony! You are not afraid to voice your opinion! I feel the same way about TWAs. I don’t think they’re always attractive or too feminine. Also, natural doesn’t mean it needs to be unkempt or just “wild”. Natural hair should be styled and polished too. That bow in Chyna’s hair made my pressure go up!

    • http://www.blogger.com/profile/00502925126089404654 Ebony CPrincess

LOL! Girl, I was waiting for the stones to be thrown at me for this one! I do sometimes like wild hair, like when Lela James would wear hers all blown out?! OMG I fell in complete love!

    • http://www.blogger.com/profile/17339459249504714001 MeliMel

Oh yes I love Lela James’ fro. It was wild but still styled. The one of Solange above looks like bed head. Her texture and deep color is gorgeous though!

Wow, I’m not a fan of TWA’s because I’m not a fan of short hair-no matter if it’s natural or not! It’s a rare breed who can pull that off, IMO. With that said, I voted for Bre ’cause she’s so darned cute! Ms Viola looks better, those wigs were not the move, and no Kim’s hair isn’t considered a TWA ;-) .

    • http://www.blogger.com/profile/00502925126089404654 Ebony CPrincess

Interesting! I do love short hair on some women, I can say hands down I prefer short on Malinda Williams for example. I also really liked that other Top Model Bianca, when they cut her hair on the show. She had colored and relaxed her hair to within an inch of its life so after they shaved it off, I was like YASSSSSSSSSS!

I just think it’s telling that most of the responders voted for the woman who had the loosest curl pattern, which makes me feel sad, because even now we are reinforcing the idea that natural hair only looks good if it has a loose curl and/or is longer than shoulder length. :-(

    • http://www.blogger.com/profile/00502925126089404654 Ebony CPrincess

Interesting response! It made me pause for a second and really think about what you said. But honestly why is that a bad thing? Its kind’ve like I said, I know this is unpopular but I don’t too much care for TWAs. And why is it wrong or sad for women to think tighter curl patterns look best either close cropped (ala Jill Scott on Essence cover) or SL or longer. To me, it’s the same as saying “My head is too big to rock a pixie cut well” you know? I don’t necessarily think it indicates that people think less of tighter curl patterns if someone doesn’t think it looks great at this TWA stage. Thanks for your comment, it definitely was thought provoking…I may end up doing a full post about it.
