Hair Ramble: I’m so confused about my product choices!

Hair Ramble Once upon a time, I was an ingredient snob.  I have always preferred natural ingredient based products…going as far back as the origin of Jane Carter’s Nourish & Shine.  Since I’m from NJ, I remember when this was the only product of her line and my friends teased me mercilessly about spending $20 on a “grease”.  I remember Carol’s Daughter before it was available online and the only place you could get it was a small store up in Harlem.  When I started my official HHJ, it just got worse – I only wanted natural and organic products near my hair.

As you know, last year I switched up my regimen a bit and relied on Kerapro products to meet my shampooing and conditioning needs and my hair flourished!  More recently, I’ve branched out even a bit more and have been using Parnevu’s Hair Mayo and Optimum Care Products.  Although my Bee Mine Moisturizers still reign completely supreme, I realize that my hair product choices are split.  My prepoo oils and moisturizers are all natural whereas my preferred shampoos and conditioners are a mixture of synthetic and natural products.  While I still whole heartedly believe that you MUST pay attention to the ingredients in your products, I’m genuinely confused by my hair right now.  It has never felt healthier even with using the mixture of products!

For me, the way my hair responds to things overrides “theory” every time.  Yes, I believe the basic healthy hair rules are important, knowing moisture versus protein based products, understanding why sulfates may be harmful and when they are appropriate, and what ingredients actually provide moisture – but sometimes what you think your hair should LOVE in theory – it may only like.  Things you may think your hair wouldn’t like, your hair may love.  Your hair talks to you and trust me I’m listening.

I had a similar issue when I started my hair journey: I avoided silicones. Now, I actually look for them because I think my hair loves them. LOL

Right?! Its called a journey for a reason, lol!

Hey, girlie. I used to try to stay away from protein and sulfates in shampoos. I read how it did others. But I realized that my hair needs these ingredients because after a long week/month of moisturizing and oils, protein and sulfates bring my hair back to life!

      Absolutely agreed!!!!

I think it all goes back to finding what works for your hair. I tried the no sulfates but found that my hair loves shampoos with sulfates. They don’t strip my hair at all. I jhave umped on and off bandwagons in the beginning of my HHJ but now I’m at the point where I’m only using what my hair loves. Now, my inner product junkie does come out from time to time (I can’t wait to try hemp seed oil) but I’m trying to keep it at bay. So, just keep on using what works for you Ebony and your hair will continue to thrive.

You know some sulfates definitely do, but others dont. It depends on my product usage. If I have a heavy cone type product an SLS free shampoo isn’t gonna get the job done! Good comment!

So funny you mention this! In the beginning I was trying to use only natural ingredients and then realized forget this mess. I’m going to use what works. Now I will say that my hair doesn’t care for shampoo (with sulfates) and I use Terressential Hair wash and my hair loves it and I get rid of all the build up. Like they all say you gotta do what works best for you, your hair AND your budget.

You said a WORD as far as the budget thing girl!

I tried to go all no cones and sulfates. My hair did not appreciate that. Now the only thing I stay away from is parabens.

LOL @ your hair not appreciating it! I still avoid mineral oil in my moisturizers….my hair revolts!

I love this post, I feel the same way about my current product selection. I have learned to listen to my hair too though, and the two of us are having a really good time together lol. :)

LOL!!! Okayyyyy? Me & my hair too!

I still make sure to stay away from mineral oil in my products. For the longest, I couldn’t find a good deep conditioner for my hair that did not contain it. I deep conditioned with KeraPro this weekend, and I was so very pleased with the results. Thanks for the review and the suggestion to use this, I will definitely stock up the next time it goes on sale at Sally’s!

Me too, moisturizers tell the story every time with mineral oil, lanolin and petroleum I’m SO glad you like the Kerapro!

Hun you are right on point. I had the same issue and I had to stand firm and choose what works best for my hair. Lastly, have you had any experience with deciding whether to get a dc that says up to 5min, 5-10 mins or20mins, knowing very well that the ingredients list are very similar. I have always thought that anything up to 5mins is an instant dc, but when I leave it in longer I get better results than the one that says 20 mins. Thanks and pls reply cos I really want to know if I’m alone on this issue.

I actually had a bit of a giggle now after reading all the comments, the kind where my inner voice says “see, you’re not the only one!” I’ve also gone back to my basics after hopping on every bandwagon and then some. After all the noise and confusion I now know better.

I still avoid mineral oil and petrolatum like the plague, my hair also revolts. But my hair has no issues with sulphates or cones. It is a little protein sensitive so I watch out for that. It loves moisture rich dc’s and the longer I keep it in, the better. And it loves natural oils, ANY and ALL natural oils as pre-poo treatments and sealants. My hair loves roller setting and despises air drying. And what I have realised in the past 8 months of my journey (yes, still a newbie) is that sometimes the SIMPLEST way is the best way.

I am a product snob when it comes to skin & hair products and when it comes to what I eat. I can wear cheap shoes or clothes as long as i like their look but when it comes to what I put on my body, in our outside I am picky.
Even though I dont think that the beauty things they sell in the shop is really harmful I know that there are a lot of additives and a lot of things that stay and build up in the pores. I have found that the only thing that really makes skin to stay radiating fresh is to keep it clean, nourished and mosturized. Just like hair. If the pores are elastic it will get rid of dirt more easy. I use more or less the same products for my skin and hair. For me, less is more, the fewer ingriients in each bottle the happier am i.
Same with food, I want fresh ingredients and not half made ready to warm up sauces or poor quality grooceries.
So I guess I m what you call a snob when it comes to keep my body healthy, but it is the only one I have :-)
