I thought it would be fun to take a look at all the fabulous hair and red carpet looks from this past year to try to determine who takes the crown for the BEST 2012 celebrity hairstyles! Some ladies changed up their look drastically, while others stuck with the same basic silhouette. I’ve selected ten women who all rocked very different looks this year for the best 2012 celebrity hairstyles, take a look and let me know what you think!
1. Jill Scott
Miss Jilly from Philly proved beyond the shadow of a doubt that she is NOT her hair this year! She wore it relaxed, braided, shaved on one side…and then she shaved it all off to return to her natural roots. Each look is beyond gorgeous, making her my top contender for the winner of the best 2012 celebrity hairstyles!
2. Gabrielle Union
Although Gabby always goes with the same look: middle or slightly off center part, long wavy dark brown hair with a few highlights, I have to say “If it aint broke, don’t fix it!” Ms. Union knows what works for her and obviously has a preference, although she did give subtle changes here and there, adding a bang and pulling it up just a bit.
3. Brandy
Although Brandy has struggled in years past to truly define her style and wear one that compliments her beauty, she hit it out of the park this year. I had a hard time choosing just a few photos for this round up because I loved nearly every look she wore – big and natural looking, cascading curls, box braids or bangs, you name it Brandy wore it and wore it WELL!
4. Tracee Ellis Ross
The object of many a hair crush, Tracee’s hair is nearly as famous as she is! The gorgeous daughter of Diana Ross took off some of her length this year, which I must say I wasn’t a fan of (what’s the name of my site again? lol!). Actually, I think the shorter length added about 10 years to her look, but when she hosted the 2012 Black Girls Rock Awards it had grown back out a bit and I was in complete love again!
5. Rihanna
Alrighty, I added Rihanna just because I know many of you are fans. She is known for changing her look – color, cut, length, texture, etc. To be completely real, I’m not really a fan of most of her looks or maybe I’m just exhausted on her altogether. Seems like she is more famous for her personal life – smoking, drinking and living on the edge with Chris Brown than she is for her music, but I guess that works. Anywhoo, I am curious what type of hair she wore during her interview with Oprah though!
6. Beyonce
We haven’t seen many appearances from queen Bey this year; I suppose she’s been busy as a new mother. I lived for her look at this year’s BET Awards, to me Beyonce is at her very best with big, blonde wavy hair! The box braids, however were a definite miss for me. Some celebs pull it off beautifully, while others look like they walked straight outta the 90s after seeing Poetic Justice!
7. Ciara
I absolutely hated her skunk hair (black roots, platinum blonde length) but Ciara redeemed herself shortly thereafter, rocking both her signature long wavy hair with a middle part and going a bit shorter with a mid-length look for the 2012 VH1 Divas concert. She is really just a very beautiful girl.
8. Kelly Rowland
Like Brandy, Kelly has come into her own over the past year. I’ve seen numerous Kelly Rowland-inspired hair tutorials popping up on the ‘net and I even drew my own inspiration for a wig I had made (check out the full review here). I love her big curly hair, such an ode to Diana Ross! I also like that she switched it up a bit, going straight, wavy and even rocked a slicked back pony recently at VH1 Divas.
9. Alicia Keys
While her bob haircut gave many of you life I have said more than a few times that I am not a fan. I think it ages her and lacks body – with the exception of her gorgeous Essence cover photo. However, despite my opinion there is no denying that the cut was executed well and was a big hit with most ladies. Even with her now infamous cut, Alica is a big competitor for best 2012 celebrity hairstyles simply because she rocked such a various array of different styles this year.
10. Solange
Despite Solo saying she doesn’t care much about her hair, it would sure seem the complete opposite judging from her looks of 2012. Often hair seems to be the focal point of her outfit – and bigger is better! I also like that she ditched the wigs more than a few times and went with her own mid-length afro, although I do wish (like many of you told her via Twitter!) that her curls were a bit more defined.
