HairOlicious Instant Magic Shine Review

hairolicious product review

HairOlicious Instant Magic Shine is a moisturizer/leave-in conditioner created by Sara A, a healthy conscious artist and writer from Los Angeles, CA.  Sara and her husband lived in Abu Dhabi (next to Dubai) from 2008-09 for a year.  Sara is a white woman with long, dark, thick wavy hair and she noticed as she approached fifty her hair was getting drier and lacked luster.  After trying various commercial products, she realized they only provided the appearance of shinier hair temporarily (sounds familiar?) so Sara began experimenting with natural oils and ingredients taking note from the hair of the Indian women she lived near.  After a bit of research and experimentation, in 2010 she found the magic combo that makes up 99.6% of the HairOlicious product – aloe vera gel and extra virgin coconut oil.  HairOlicious contains no artificial fragrances or colors, has a light natural coconut scent which everyone seems to love, and is vegan and cruelty-free. The product was created in the Shenandoah Valley, USA and is shipped out of Maryland. It is a made by a tiny family-owned firm.

Company claims:

Much to Sara’s surprise and delight, HairOlicious has proven to work especially well on Black hair. Apply to damp or dry hair, starting with about 1 teaspoon or less and adding more as needed. Allow the warmth from your hands to help HairOlicious penetrate and smooth the hair shaft. It works fabulously well to moisturize, de-frizz, define curls, add LOTS of healthy shine, and most of all SOFTEN the hair. Also provides a light styling hold for twist-outs and Bantu knots.

Ingredients:  99.3% Pure Aloe & Certified Organic Extra-Virgin Coconut Oil.  Contains less than 1% total of the following: Butylene Glycol, Calendula Officinalis Flower Extract, Arnica Montana Flower Extract, Tocophersolan, TEA-Carbomer, Methylparaben, Diazolidinyl Urea, DMDM Hydantoin, Trisodium, EDTA.  Contains NO ARTIFICIAL COLORS OR FRAGRANCES. Longing 4 Length Thoughts:

This product was reviewed by two L4L staff members, Monet and Roni.  Below are their opinions and experiences with the product.

Monet Says:  I applied it weekly to wet hair before applying castor oil then cream and either two strand or flat twisting.  I appreciated the natural ingredients because I’ve been a lot more label conscious lately. I also liked how moisturized my hair was throughout the week and that it didn’t weigh my hair down. However, because of the packaging I didn’t like how runny it was or that the mixture separated. Application would have been easier if it was in a bottle with a nozzle or top because it was hard to scoop out.  The smell is faint but sweet.  Overall, I think it’s a great leave-in. However, I would recommend it as an oil/sealant, especially if you do the LOC Method.. Most leave-ins have a cream base but this product has an oil base so since I’m currently doing the Castor Oil Challenge I felt like I was applying oil twice (and technically I was).  The website claims that each 4 oz. jar provides 50-60 applications. I HIGHLY disagree with that, maybe 8 applications maximum for myhair. However, even for that amount it’s still affordable and I would purchase it.  I don’t make products at home but if I did, my mixture would consists of most of these ingredients, if not all.

HairOlicious Review

How the product appears

Roni Says:  I used the HairOlicious Instant Magic Shine as a leave-in conditioner for about two months. After putting my freshly washed, conditioner and detangled hair into four sections, I applied what I like to call a “finger tip full” amount of HairOlicous to each section starting at the tip and working my way up .  I then combed the product through and styled my hair as usual. The directions recommended that HairOlicious be used on dry hair, however I rarely if ever style my hair while dry, which is why I opted to use it on damp hair instead.

HairOlicious Before After

Roni’s hair before and after

Initially, I wasn’t too impressed with HairOlicious; I prefer my leave-in conditioners to be thick and creamy, where as HairOlicious was thinner and more similar to coconut oil when it is solidified. It also has a very mild coconut scent, which is fine but since Organic Extra-Virgin Coconut Oil is one of the main ingredients I was expecting a little more yummy-goodness…lol.  After using HairOlicious for a few weeks the thinner consistency grew on me and I also noticed a difference in my hair; it felt softer and looked shinier. And it’s no wonder that I ended up loving HairOlicious Instant Magic Shine, like I mentioned one of its main ingredients is coconut oil, which my hair  absolutely loves.

Bottom line:  Monet and Roni would both recommend HairOlicious Instant Magic Shine.  Both love the natural, organic ingredients and think the price is affordable.
