We have all been there right? You know…you have a party or event to attend and your hair needs what I like to call some “get right!” Either your intended style didn’t work or your rocking a five-day old braid/twist out that needs life…You are pushed for time and when you look in the mirror all you can say is “ugh…what am I going to do with my hair.” Well don’t lose hope, just be prepared because we all know that with natural hair, disasters are bound to happen. In addition to my go to products I like to keep a few items on hand (and when I travel) to help keep me from having a melt down due to my sometimes unruly hair…I like to call it my Natural Hair Emergency Kit.
Bobby Pins/Hair Pins
The first item in the Natural Hair Emergency Kit…hair pins! I cannot stress enough how hair pins have saved my life…not literally but we all know how detrimental a hair emergency can be. Before I went natural the only time I used hair pins was when I rocked a bun. But now almost every style I do hair pins are involved; they fix fly-a-ways, keep my hair out of my face, secure my cute up-do’s and even help to add height when placed just right. Hair pins are a must!
Hair ties/Ponytail Holders
Whatever you call them, rubber bands, hair ties or ponytail holders, just make sure you have them; they are definitely a life saver too. And make sure they don’t have any metal on them…we don’t want to snag that natural hair.
Hair gel
Pesky edges be gone! I use hair gel regularly; when my hair is out, in ponytail, bunned or in an up-do. Hair gel is the number one product in my Natural Hair Emergency Kit! Why? Well, when all else fails you can always bun it! Add a little hair gel, smooth it out and viola your hair is done!
Hair Perfumes/Refresher Sprays
Hair not so fresh and no time to wash it? Well reach for a little hair perfume or refresher spray, works great at adding a little moisture while making your tresses fresher! And if you are a DIY kinda girl then you experiment making your own.
Hair Accessories
Scarves, banana clips, flowers, barrettes…the list is endless and you can be as creative as you want! Hair accessories can add a little something extra to a busted braid out or a little flair to plain old bun. Just have fun with it! When traveling, I only carry a few of my favorite and most versatile accessories in my natural hair emergency kit.
So don’t fret this holiday season if your hair starts misbehaving…just pull out your “Natural Hair Emergency Kit” and get to experimenting. I swear some of my most creative styles were discovered in a pinch. Have fun, be creative and “werk it hunny!”
