Wash Day with Miss Jessie’s!

This is my first wash day since my relaxer touch up.  This weekend I visited my cousins’ again but I didn’t have to pack up an entire arsenal of products because they have “good” stock.  In fact, all I took with me was a product I picked up at the Nzuri Natural Hair Show, OBI Curl Hydration Spray (more on this product later) to use as my daily moisturizer and leave in conditioner.  Also, I’ve been curious about the performance of Miss Jessie’s products so I grabbed three of the sample packs I got in a swag bag at the hair show as well to try out.  Before I get into all of that though, let me recap my wash day steps:

(1) Shampoo twice with Organix Argan Oil (2) Deep Conditioned with Miss Jessie’s Super Sweetback Treatment (3) Spritzed my damp hair with OBI Curl Hydration Spray (4) Airdried (5) Applied more OBI Naturals Spray (6) Sealed with EVCO.

Okay now onto my thoughts on this Miss Jessie’s Super Sweetback Treatment.  As you know, I think it’s ridiculous for some people to think certain products are only for naturals.  As I’ve said time and time again, how on earth does the product know if your hair is natural, color treated or relaxed?  Exactly…it doesn’t.  So, although I don’t have any curls I’m trying to enhance, shampoos, conditioners, leave-ins, moisturizers…even detanglers work for both natural and relaxed hair.  That being said, I’ve always been curious about the popularity of this particular line but never wanted to try it because of their prices.  However, after receiving several samples and even a full sized product (most of which I gave to my friend DrMystique12) I decided to give it a go.

For starters – the ingredients of this product genuinely confuse me.   This conditioner retails for a whopping $48 for 16 ounces!   So even before I tried it, I knew I’d never purchase the full size.  Ever.  Therefore this isn’t a full review.  However, for forty-freakin-eight dollars, there shouldn’t be a synthetic ingredient in sight!  Let alone MOSTLY synthetic ingredients – cones, alcohols and fillers!  Why on earth is this product line so popular?!  I don’t understand it.

About my experience:  The product consistency is nice and thick and it smells amazing.  It coated my hair nicely upon application and I had really high hopes at this point.  After covering with a plastic cap, I sat under my cousin’s hooded dryer for about 15 minutes and then walked around with it for another hour before rinsing. As soon as the water hit my hair to rinse, the nice, coated feeling I had disappeared.  My hair didn’t feel soft, moisturized and lacked slip.  In fact I was so disappointed with the way my hair felt that had I been at home, I would have re-conditioned with Kerapro or even the Optimum Care Masque.  I was disgusted by Miss Jessie’s because I feel they are completely taking advantage of the “natural movement” and providing a crappy overpriced product based on consumer ignorance.  Secondly, before my HHJ, I probably would have paid my hard earned dollars thinking that I was buying the best of the best, not understanding about ingredients or how well conditioned hair is supposed to feel.  Honestly, I am hugely disappointed with the performance of this product.

I’m glad my curiosity has been cured – Miss Jessie’s is not for me, not that I ever thought it would be at those prices.  Ridiculous.

I feel the same exact way about the Carol Daughter’s Hair Milk line! My hair is tex-laxed so I just knew that it would leave my hair super moisturized with a head full of curls. Nope. Just dry and tangled. #epicfail

Yep, Carol’s Daughter can do it to you too! lol

The only product that I’ve used from Miss Jessie’s was the curl styling cream on my flexi rod set and I wasn’t impressed. I also used the Baby Buttercream on my daughter’s hair and while it helped with detangling it left her hair hard and tacky. I’m mystified why people still pay for it but I guess it works for their hair.

I agree – although I hear a lot of good things about their Pillow Soft Curls nowadays. But honestly I am quite confused as to how it became so popular! A prime example of how powerful good marketing is I suppose…

I’ve never used Miss Jessie’s products and I always thought, like you said, that the quality of their ingredients did not warrant their outrageous (IMO) prices…

    • http://www.longing4length.com/ EbonyCPrincess

I had no idea how poor the quality of the ingredients was. SMH.

Thank you for the honest review, Eb! I’ve never tried Miss Jessie’s products but, after reading this, I have no reason to. And those prices sound like Moroccanoil without the quality.

You are more than welcome, and yep I would say you can definitely pass!

I really get angry when I see expensive beauty products containing cheap ingredients. I’ve never been curious about these products and I’m glad I wasn’t. They’re way too expensive!

    • http://www.longing4length.com/ EbonyCPrincess

I do too! But thank goodness we know the difference now!

  • Robyn Kleinhans

Sorry that you had to experience this hon. i know exactly what you mean with regard to over priced crap in a jar. I’ve come to realise that sometimes the “cheap” products are the ones my hair loves. I’m very glad Miss Jessie’s isn’t available in my country so that I never was tempted to try it out.

Right, I mean thank GOD for our HHJ’s in which we’ve learned its the ingredients – not the name or the price!

  • Shawnie

As always, thank you for your honest feedback, Ebony. That price and those ingredients are just unbelievable. It just goes to show that high prices do NOT equal quality products/results.

OAN – your hair looks really cute in the pic above.

As I stated on IG I received a full sized jar of the super sweet back treatment in a gift bag. Of course I was excited to try it because I would surely never buy it for $48, that’s a pair of shoes! Lol. Like you I feel for that price every ingredient should be organic. I used the entire jar between two washes and I wasn’t impressed at all my hair felt stiff and dry afterwards. I also didn’t care for the smell. I actually sat under the dryer for 30 minutes. At least I can say I tried it but I will stick with my GPB Glycogen Protein Balancing Conditioner which is less then $10 for 16oz. You can’t always believe the hype when it comes to these so called super star products.

Agreed, and I loveeeeee Aubrey Organics conditioners!

Well dang… I wont be buying that! But I do love the Pillow Soft Curls. Its hard to try a new deep conditioner when you have a solid in your regimen already Eb… That KeraPro can’t be topped!
