Well, by now you know I am obsessed with love award shows and unlike last year I actually watched nearly all of the 2013 Grammys! I actually thought it was a decent show, no major sound issues and it encompassed many different genres of music quite well – although many twitter users complained about the lack of hip hop representation. I mean, there were collab performances from Wiz Khalifa, Jay-Z and LL Cool J hosted (not even mentioning the nonsense at the end). So, I think it was fairly balanced especially based on record performances from the past year. Now what I WAS quite upset about was the complete dismissal of Gospel & Christian music from the show. We didn’t see any gospel Grammys presented nor were there any performances. You can’t tell me Go Get It by Mary Mary (which won a Grammy) would not have fit right in with the show…and I know my girls would have shut.it.down! In fact, in true ECP fashion, I wrote a letter to the Grammy committee expressing my displeasure over the lack of gospel/Christian music representation.
Anyway, onto the 2013 Grammys best and worst hair! I thought there were plenty of “hits” some which were unanimously loved by critics, some which are probably a bit more controversial. I narrowed it down to my top five hair looks of the night so let’s jump right into it!
1. Taylor Swift
I loveeeeed Taylor’s red carpet braided updo hairstyle! It was the perfect blend of structured and messy, and was just so dern glamorous! And every time she posed (she must’ve met with Tyra or Jennifer Lopez beforehand) she was just serving with her facial expressions. She’s so pretty and definitely doesn’t always need hair swirling about her to accentuate her beauty. I will try my hand at recreating the look for our Protective Styling Challenge.
2. Rihanna
I think everyone loved Riri’s look! She even won me over with the ombre hair! It is such a classic style – center part, soft waves but paired with her makeup and that #POW! red lip, Rihanna was definitely a flawless beauty. Andddddd, am I the only one who was hella surprised by how well she sang?
3. Beyonce
After not being a fan of her extreme side part looks from last month, Beyonce completely won me over again with last night’s simple, sleek ponytail look. This is a great example of simple, but chic. I love how simple her ensemble was but still totally appropriate! Just loved Bey’s look from head to toe.
4. Erica Campbell of Mary Mary
Evidently gospel music doesn’t matter to paparrazi and photographers because I could barely find a photo close enough to display the beauty of her hairstyle. Granted, I’m a bit biased because I have loved Mary Mary’s music for a LONG time, but I must say Mrs. Campbell BROUGHT it with this long curly style. Compliments her beauty so well and what I really love is that it isn’t 16 ounces of hair, but looks very natural. Just gorgeous! Stay tuned…I’m feeling an inspired look coming on!
5. Solange
Loveeeed the bigness of her afro and I also appreciated her “no makeup” makeup look! Very natural all the way around! Werk it Solo!
Now onto my five worst hairstyles from the 2013 Grammys; there were even a few well dress ladies whose hair was the only thing wrong with their look and if it weren’t for that they would have been perfection! But here are my five complete hair misses from last night.
1. Kelly Rowland
I liked neither the hair nor the outfit to be honest, but specifically lets talk about the hair. I’m glad Kelly is switching it up from her Diana Ross curls that we all loved so much, but this look she’s been doing lately is such a step backwards in my opinion. It looks like she just slapped a regular ole wig on her head, pulled it back and twisted the back up. With all of the fancy new ways to enhance a wig’s appearance (u-part, lace, closures, frontals, etc), I just expect so much MORE from her! And although she does have a large forehead making some hair in the face necessary, the full blunt bang ages her a bit in my opinion.
2. Jennifer Lopez
Remember this is about HAIR not the body, makeup or the fierceness she’s serving with her face! That thin lil top knot was a bit too severe, too small, and much too casual for my liking. As I said about Beyonce above, simple can be chic but this needed some flair, some glamour, just something to finish off the rest of her amazing look.
3. Ashanti
So I’ve told ya’ll I’m an undercover Ashanti fan, but everything about her look is a miss. Those DIY-looking-pinned-on flowers to the frock, and the headed-to-my-senior-prom updo. And why did she keep fanning out her dress in each photo (only made it worst)! Hoping I will see her try again tonight on BET Honors!
4. Alicia Keys
I sooooo wasn’t a fan of her cut initially but since then, I think the way her stylist has been preparing her for appearances gives her a much more polished and edgy look. However, last night’s hairsprayed to death pompadour was a definitely a miss for me! It was (like JLo’s hair) too severe and a bit of a bad throwback – gave me a 1960′s men’s hair vibe.
5. Adele
I know the fashionistas and critics are slamming her dress, but let’s talk about the hair for a minute. Adele is really pretty and obviously loved by most who’ve ever heard her sing. In fact, her performance at last year’s Grammy award show was one of my favorite in the last ten years, right up there with Beyonce and Prince singing Purple Rain (toldja I love award shows). However, after the birth of her child, she’s obviously picked up a little weight – who doesn’t – so the high poofy hair just made her face look rounder! Plus, she always wears big hair! I think a sleek flat ironed style with a center part would have been such a breath of fresh air and elongated her face. I only wish everyone were as kind in their “criticism” of her look, some of the comments made about her last night were downright hateful.
What do you think of my picks? Who were your favorites from the night?
Oh, and can we also just take a moment to pause and appreciate the obvious love that was flowing throughout the event?!
I loved seeing these couples openly affectionate and NO I am not going to comment on Chris Brown and Rihanna. Not even touching that one with a ten foot pole! lol.
Who plans to watch BET Honors tonight? It’s one of my favorite award shows because they always select great performers and the overall message is so positive! Catch me on Twitter @ECPrincess1 if you wanna chat live about it!
