L4LPSC: 1st Check-In!

Time for the first check in of the L4LPSC!!!  You have a number of options to officially check in – you can simply leave a comment and let me (and others) know how you are doing.  Things you may want to include:

  • What has been working for you?
  • What has been most helpful?
  • What you are struggling with?
  • Any requests?

I am really interested to know how it’s going and what improvements I can make as the challenge host.  Also, for those of you who have blogs, I’ve created another link up; this is a great opportunity to visit each other’s blogs, find some new ladies to follow and show additional support.  So if you have updated on your blog – let us know by linking it (or just leave a comment, monthly blog posts aren’t mandatory).

L4LPSC

There are (or will be) tutorials for each of the pictured looks!

As for me, I am shocked at how well it is going!  I haven’t been bored or felt restricted…something I have always felt whenever I tried to “force” myself to protective style long term.  Although it has only been one month – a month without wearing my hair down is a true record for me!  Once it was determined that so many of you were interested in a protective styling challenge, I simply made up my mind to give you what you asked for and to make it fun and interesting.  As I planned, I found so many style inspirations and once the challenge officially began, you all have been providing continual inspiration.  Thank you for being such active participants – it has been a great help to me.  The great thing about sharing your styles with our hashtags (#L4LPSC & #L4LHair) is that we all have an opportunity to view your styles, not only challengers but anyone on a HHJ looking for cute protective styles.  Plus your photos will be continued style inspiration long after the challenge ends, so again thank you!

I’ve rambled long enough…please let me know how it is going, how you are enjoying the protective styling challenge thus far.  What are your favorite styles?  And again, if you have any requests or ideas – please share below!

Thanks, you’re getting more creative yourself there missy!

  • Andrea Bonds

I figured I would have a hard time with this challenge. I’m not very creative myself. I have attempted trying a couple of the styles you have posted, but it’s difficult for me and i don’t trust anyone else to touch my hair anymore. I’ve mostly been just clipping my hair up with claw clips. Nothing really special. :(

    • http://www.longing4length.com/ EbonyCPrincess

I keep saying less is more! It’s okay if you aren’t doing the most amazing, eye-catching styles in the world, you’ve been keeping your ends protected and that’s enough! Don’t be so hard on yourself! :-)

  • Crowning Glory

Haven’t had any challenges really. I chose to have extension dos throughout this challenge just took down my tree braids, washed, dc’ed and currently have two french braids which I am gonna keep for a week before deciding on what to do next. I have worn my hair down 2 days straight since the challenge begun this was between taking down the braids, washing and air drying so I have 5 days left. Do you have a frontal pic of the fourth style first row looks a bit like whats on my head at the moment?

  • Robyn Kleinhans

I have been having trouble being creative whilst having low manipulation protective styles all at the same time. Or am I asking for too much, lol. I touched up yesterday, so here’s hoping that the last two thirds of the challenge I’ll be able to be a bit more creative no that I’m not dealing with the insane NG. So far so good though. Didn’t even wear my hair out when I planned to for a big party; ended up slapping on a faux pony and out the door I went!

    • http://www.longing4length.com/ EbonyCPrincess

Hey…faux pony to the rescue!!! I’m about to be wigging out my mind.

  • Shaniqua

I originally planned to try a different style every week but ummmm that didn’t happen lol. I didn’t have a problem finding styles, I have a problem finding time to do them! With two small children everything is non stop. So I’ve beien wearing different buns, making sure to switch the spot up. I haven’t used any type of heat and I haven’t worn my hair down. Also I’m ten weeks post and I’m aiming for six more!

    • http://www.longing4length.com/ EbonyCPrincess

LOL, you know what – less is more sometimes! You have been heat free and PS’ing the entire time, that’s awesome!

  • Kyra (mekrc)

I’ve enjoyed the challenges. I am continue to shampoo and deep condition every week. I will be three weeks post on Friday. If I’m not able to complete a protective style my daughter will assist me. I get great ideas from this challenge and complements from ppl who notices the different duos. I did notice my hair is growing when I relaxed last and not messing with it everyday. Just m/s nightly.

Great!!!!! Love this update and your styles on instagram!

  • Delreese Gifft

I’ve been doing okay so far with the challenge. I’m not too tempted to wear my hair down, and most of the time it’s in a little bun-ish thing.(I can’t officially call it a bun because…well, it looks like crap lol) so my ends are nice and tucked away. I follow my usual regimen of deep conditioning and co-washing, so nothing has really changed in that aspect. I was going to do a sew in as a protective style for a couple of weeks, but I think it was done too tightly, so I took it out after only a couple of days. I’ll try to step my bun game up a bit and be more creative in the upcoming weeks.

    • http://www.longing4length.com/ EbonyCPrincess

LOL @ “bunish” but so long as your keeping it tucked away!

    • Andrea Bonds

I think I know what you mean by bun-ish! lol! I’ve got my lil tiny, pitiful bun up right now. lol

  • Carbride

I’m surprised at how much I have enjoyed this challenge thus far. I’m glad I joined. I haven’t used my heat pass nor have I had any down days. The only problem I’m having is finding a reasonable priced deep conditioner that works great on my hair. Any suggestions?

    • Robyn Kleinhans

I am the biggest fan of ORS Replenishing Conditioner, and although it’s not cheap, it is reasonably priced and it’s true value for money. I bought my bottle at the beginning of December 2012 and it’s nowhere close to finished, and I DC weekly. If you’re a little protein sensitive, it will last you even longer as it is a light to mild protein conditioner.

      • Carbride

Actually that’s the one I have now, I bought it a few weeks ago. It’s been working ok for me but I wasn’t wow’d by it until last night. I experimented and mixed some JBCO, EVOO, & honey in it and my hair feels awesome!! Hopefully it wasn’t just a 1 hit wonder.

        • http://www.longing4length.com/ EbonyCPrincess

That sounds good! As for my recommendation, I actually really loved the Parnevu Hair Mayo that I recently reviewed, it costs around $7 for a big 16 oz. jar! I also liked ORS as well.

Thanks for helping out Robyn! :-)

Groupon is having 4 of its hair styling tools, including the spin pin, all for $7. I thought it’d be great for those in this challenge. I saw it a few days ago, but forgot to post. Offer expires tonight! http://www.groupon.com/deals/gg-goody-simple-styles-bundle?c=all&p=52

it’s been going great, protective styling fit my lazy lifestyle, I dont like messing with my hair so I’ve been pinning and french braiding for a week at at a time, for the whole month of january I’ve only used 3 different hair style so Im not bored. I do my high bun on sundays for church for my “sophisticated” looks, I find buns not very sleep friendly to me, so I’d take my bun down and pin my hair and it last a week. Looking forward to try some of the style Ebony posted this month.
    toodles!
