Dressed-up Natural Hair

I’m a firm believer that your hair can make or break a look, so I’m all about being prepared. With wedding and prom season upon us, it’s a must that you have a few cute, chic styles ready in your style arsenal. There’s often the debate on whether or not natural hair can be “dressed up” or styled for formal events and I’m here to tell that it can. Natural hair is so versatile and the styling options can be endless. Sometimes it just requires a little planning, practice and whole lot of patience.  So if you have a wedding, prom or formal event coming up here are a few tips to help you create a fab natural hair style.

Plan ahead

If possible (and like with anything else in life) plan ahead. It is essential and can save you from the frustration of trying to salvage a busted hair style on the day of your event. If you are looking to have your hair whipped into fabulousness by a professional, be sure that you know and trust their work. Also make sure that they can help you achieve the look you are going for ahead of time. In the event that you are a do-it-yourselfer like me, then do a few trail runs a few weeks ahead to make sure the style can be created without any hiccups. However, as all naturalistas know, natural hair can tend to have a mind of its own at times so I advise playing around with variations and such of your style just to be on the safe side. And since the washing, conditioning and styling process for most naturals is no joke, make sure that you have the necessary amount of time penciled in. So if it takes at least 12 hours for your hair to air dry don’t wash it at midnight and expect those curls to be popping and ready at 6am…you can already count that as a fail. So plan, plan, plan.

Style Options

Like I mentioned the styling options for naturals can be endless. I recommend searching YouTube and Instagram for inspiration, those are my go to places when I’m in a styling rut. My motto is “be creative and have fun with your hair!” Some of my favorite styles were created on whim when I just playing around with my hair, so just go with it and that’s also why it’s important to plan ahead.

  • Up-dos & Pin-ups – I say freestyle it! Grab those hair/bobby pins and get to work. I say think back to your creamy crack days and pull out your French rolls…lol. And if you’re unable to plan ahead up-dos/pin-ups can be a life saver. You can also rock your twists/braids in an up-do/pin-up. So just go for it.

  • Buns – The top knot has been a big hit lately and all the celebs are rocking them, so it’s definitely a keeper. But buns alone are a timeless style in my opinion.
  • Hair accessories – Adding hair accessories to almost any style can add a little extra pizzazz. Flowers, feathers, and hats (depending on your look and event) can be fun. So don’t be afraid to try something new (I’m especially talking to myself here).
  • Wigs & weaves – If you just don’t want to deal with your natural hair or are currently rocking protective styles then throw on a wig or rock your sew-in.
