Hello ladies! I wanted to chat with you a bit about my approach to reviewing hair products. I haven’t done a whole lot of hair product reviews throughout the history of L4L for a few reasons. For the post part, when I find something I love…I run with it. How often have you seen/heard me talk about Bee Mine moisturizers, the KeraPro conditioner and Giovanni Smooth as Silk shampoo…just as an example. A lot right?! The other reason is that I am never sure how to make the reviews most helpful. I mean, hearing someone rave or rant about a product lets you know whether they liked or hated it…but WHY though? Is it the ingredients? The smell? The consistency? The price? The availability? And if you say you love it but I never see them blog about it ever again, how much did you REALLY love it? There is a fine line between rotating products and trying new things and just being a product junkie, you know? I find that the first is much more helpful as a reader than the latter, so that is the direction I try to lean.
I will be doing more product reviews over he next few months and I am trying to formulate a plan to make it helpful. My current approach is to investigate the ingredients and post any necessary research on key ingredients first and then slowly add one new product into rotation at a time. I never try multiple new products at a time because if something goes terribly awry, I want to be able to pinpoint the problem. I always “test” a product for at least one month before posting a review and I always think to myself 1) If it was sent to me (free) for review – would I have spent my money on the item? 2) If I purchased it with my own money, would I re-purchase? Why or why not? And if possible I like to include photos and/or video footage of the product’s performance. Monet and Roni (the natural hair contributing writers) also follow the same method in their reviews.
Since I have a gang load of new products that I will be reviewing, I want to reassess my approach and make sure it is helpful to you. Please let me know if there is anything you’d like to see added to product reviews, or would like to know for yourselves. I want the upcoming reviews to be beneficial, so kindly drop a comment and let me know your thoughts!
