After all the crushing I’ve been doing on Brandy’s curly hair looks, I finally got my own kinky-curly steez! It’s been a long-time coming, I was sent this hair from oWigs.com about 6 weeks ago, but it took me that long to make the wig and rebraid my hair in preparation for wearing this unit. First, check out my video showcasing the hair…
Okay, now for details on how I made my u-part wig. As I said in the video I used a spandex dome cap; some ladies like using deluxe weaving caps, but they are just too small for my head! Plus, the stretchiness of the dome cap is much more giving than the weaving caps. (1) I sewed the hair together in more of a “v-shape” around my leave out to make blending a bit easier as you can see in the photos below. (2) After cutting away the bit of material around the ‘v’ I sewed two combs from my Evony half-wig onto the wefts. I prefer these combs over the wig clips everyone was first using to make their u-part wigs because they are more comfortable and do not snag and pull out any hair the way the others do. (3) The inside of the cap is relatively smooth making it a comfortable protective style.
This is the first u-part wig I’ve made that turned out PERFECTLY! I was so hesitant about using all three bundles, in fact I initially requested only two bundles at 14 and 16 inches after overwhelming myself with hair in the previous wig I made, but the rep at oWigs.com suggested using three at lengths 20, 18 & 16 because she knew this curl pattern would have a lot of shrinkage and she was absolutely right.
I mentioned in the video that I cannot give a true review of this hair just yet, but I will say I think it is a really great affordable option for human hair. I sealed the wefts and folded the tracks rather than cut while sewing onto the cap, so I don’t expect much shedding. As I ran my fingers through the hair to fluff it out, I didn’t encounter any tangling or shedding.
I plan to wear this wig til the end of the L4L Protective Styling Challenge, relax my hair and enjoy it for a while and return to wearing this wig and getting a sew in for the summer. I’ll give you a full update on the performance of this hair after I’ve worn it long enough to form an opinion. In the meantime, I am enjoying the HECK outta this one! I may not have the exact Brandy curly hair look, but this wig is fierce in its own right! *snaps fingers in z-formation*
