Dark and Lovely Au Naturale Anti-Shrinkage Line | 1st Impression

I received three products from the Dark and Lovely Au Naturale Anti-Shrinkage line back in May.  Now ladies, what’s the first thing we do whenever we purchase, receive or even window shop for any new cosmetic item?  SMELL IT!!!!  You know I’m telling the truth!  Let me just say this line smells divine, the mango oil is definitely prominent.

The Dark and Lovely Au Natural Anti-Shrinkage line is designed to hydrate your hair and elongate kinks and coils.  Each of the six products are enriched with mango oil and bamboo milk and as I already said, they smell amazing. I received the hydrating soak shampoo, the knot out conditioner and the 10-in-1 gelee for review purposes.  My only complaint right away, is the lack of a deep, penetrating conditioner.  I hate when a line doesn’t have everything you need for a full and complete wash day to keep your hair healthy.  I know from speaking with Mezei Jefferson, Soft Sheen Carson educational director, at the Black Girls RUN! event that there is a leave-in conditioner forthcoming so perhaps the deep conditioner is being formulated as well.

Anyway, I shampooed my little cousins natural hair with the hydrating soak shampoo.  It does contain SLS, but did not feel to strip her hair.  This line does have a sulfate free cleanser called the Beyond Gentle & Sulfate Free Wash, but it was not sent to me for review.    After washing, I deep conditioned her hair (with heat) using a combination of ORS Replenishing Pak and the Dark and Lovely Anti-Shrinkage Knot Out Conditioner.  Her hair felt so soft and moisturized when I rinsed the conditioners and it was virtually tangle free.

Next, I added a bit more of the Knot Out Conditioner as a leave in and lightly blow dried her hair.  Next I parted a circle in the center of her head to begin the style.  We were short on time so I did medium sized cornrows around the perimeter going upwards, using the 10-in-1 gelee to fight frizz and give her hair a bit of shine.

Lastly I used more 10-in-1 gelee to two strand twist the center of her hair.  As I said, we were short on time, so I only allowed her twists to stay in for about an hour before removing and I was amazed by the results.  Destiny (my little cousin) has notoriously difficult hair.  Its soft and curly, but frizz appears almost immediately after styling.  She also has a LOT of shrinkage as I demonstrated in a previous post featuring her hair.  So whenever I have attempted braid/twist out styles in the past, her hair has lacked definition and always has more frizz than I would like.

However, after just ONE hour of drying her twist out had definition and shine and her cornrows were smooth and neat.  I have already recommended this line to my SIL for her daughter’s hair and will tell me cousin she needs to jump on this for Destiny’s hair.  Best thing is every product in the Dark and Lovely Au Naturale Anti-Shrinkage line retails for under $10! You canNOT beat that with a stick!

She looks BEAUTIFUL! Love that smile!

  • Robyn

She’s adorable! And I WISH I could cornrow my hair like that. I would be set for at least a week, talk about funky protective styling!

    • Thank you! And I can braid OTHER people’s hair really well but my own? Not so much. My arms get tired, I get lazy and I can never seem to keep the parts straight!

  • Great review!! Your cousins hair is just too cute! I just tried this line as well!! I was very impressed by the lack of tangles that had after using the Knot-Out Conditioner. And I agree that it smells wonderfull. I will try using the conditioner as a leave-in as well. I’ve only used it for one wash cycle so far, but I think it’s going to be a nice alternative to the Shea Moisture line for me and my daughter.

    • Thanks Ticka! Yeah I do think its a nice SM alternative, whichever is on sale that week would be how I decide LOL!

  • Lisa

    She is too cute!!

What’s the difference between gel and gelee? Was there any silicon in it?

    • I’m not sure, since I haven’t tried it on my own hair just yet I have not investigated the ingredients and differences too much just yet.
