Healthy Eating = Healthy Hair


If you ready my last postThe ‘Straight’ Natural Hair Debate” then you definitely saw my luscious locks. *insert sarcasm* Since going natural in November 2009 many naturals (mostly recent ones) tell me they love my hair and ask how they can have my results and/or “grow long hair.” One of the first things I ask is about their diet.  Healthy hair and healthy living are directly correlated.

Unfortunately many of us think once you eliminate the chemicals from your hair regimen your hair will grow luxurious and long. For some this is true but for many it’s genetics and diet. I have always had long hair. However, I have noticed my hair is at its absolute healthiest when I’m at MY healthiest.

However, because hair is comprised literally of the last of our body’s nutrients, we don’t see the benefits of what we put into our bodies from our hair until way into the future (hair grows in cycles). Which means we have to eat extra healthy and clean for healthy hair *because* it is the last of our body to get nutrients. Last year I added green smoothies to my diet and I have seen a world of difference. The shine my hair has now definitely wasn’t there when I was relaxing it and I attribute it to eating healthier.

My favorite healthy hair foods are: salmon, walnuts, sweet potatoes, eggs, spinach, lentils, Greek yogurt, blueberries and poultry and below are just a few of their health benefits for both body and hair.

  • Salmon:  high in protein (amino acids) and omega-3 fatty acids.
  • Walnuts: high in vitamin E
  • Sweet potatoes: high in vitamins B6, C, D and iron.
  • Eggs: excellent source of protein

    I love salmon, but I neber thought to blend it into a smoothy. Can you taste it in the smoothie?

    For me water had helped so much. A few yrs ago I went on a personal diet journey and lost 15lbs. I ate rarely healthy but not healthy enough. I cut off all sodas and juices, snacks and I ate lots of fruits, veggies, a few sugar snacks here and there, smaller meals and water. I started drinking about 6-8 glasses a day. I’m still not sure on the correct amount but I know it was a lot because I bought a water bottle and walked with it every where I went I mean every where. After the first month I saw a drastic change in my skin, breathing and hair. My skin got so clean and clear everyone was complimenting me on it, I was able to breathe a lot better which was strange because I was a small girl before I lost weight 5’4 133lbs and after I was 117lbs. And my hair omg It had gotten thicker and shinny. I’m about to go back in that direction water, exercise and proper nutrition will be part of my daily intake. I can’t wait to see the results.
