Fitness Friday: How to Pack a Salad in a Jar

Fitness Friday: How to Pack a Salad in a Jar

I have been seeing lots of ladies sharing their prettily packed salad in a jar recipes on Instagram for months now.  I honestly thought it was a trendy fad to use mason jars rather than plain ol’ ziploc bags or plastic containers until recently when I decided to research it a bit.  I was surprised to learn that mason jars have a much more practical purpose when using them to pack the infamous “salad in a jar” – in addition to the convenient meal prep idea, if you vacuum seal your jars, it aids in keeping the vegetables fresh and your lettuce crunchy for up to five days!  WHO KNEW?!  (Okay, obviously lots of you did…I was evidently the only one in the dark!)

Well, I love salads and the idea that I could potentially prepare lunch for an entire work week on Sunday made me fall in love with the idea.  I ordered a set of mason jars and a vacuum seal attachment from Amazon which arrived in two days and immediately got started.  I will be sharing more details and specific recipes in future posts, but today I just want to discuss how to pack the perfect salad in a jar.

The idea is the jar will contain all your salad ingredients and fixings layered in a way that keeps each item fresh without compromising the taste. When you are ready to consume your salad, you simply open, shake and eat straight from the jar or for best results pour into a bowl.  Below is a pictorial on how to layer your salad in a jar for the best results.

In case you are new to the salad in a jar concept, you begin with the bottom “layer” – add the dressing first and work your way up.  Notice for the protein and cheeses, I specifically say to add only if the salad will be consumed within 24 hours.  Otherwise keep it separate and add to tossed salad when you are ready to eat.  I wish I had filmed the salads I made this week but I was just getting my feet wet and had no idea it would work out so well, I promised to come back soon and update you with a recipe and step-by-step instructions, including how I vacuum sealed my jars (trust me it is not hard at all).

In the meantime, if any of you are salad in a jar experts, by all means share your tips and favorite recipes with me.  I think this idea is such a god-send for those of us who fight the daily struggle of balancing your life with the tedious tasks of meal planning, prep and clean-up.   I’d eat healthy all the time if I had a maid and chef…and the only person I’m responsible for me is me! God bless all the single mothers out there, I have no idea how you do it!

I’ve never come across this idea. Seems very clever, did any of the veggies get soggy? Nothing worse than mushy food.

    • No!!! They stay crunchy and fresh. It’s the most amazing phenomenon ever! I kept it for five days and they stayed vacuum sealed and everything. Tasted as great on day 5 as on day 1!
