For some naturals wash day is literal…it occupies your entire day. Although I like to treat my hair, taking a full day once per week to do my hair is a bit much…even for me! So, I’ve gotten my wash day down to a couple of hours, especially in the summer heat which helps my hair dry faster. My wash day routine has changed slightly since discovering the benefits of oil rinsing a few weeks ago and lately this has been it.
Sometimes I pre-poo using coconut oil since it has been proven to decrease breakage when used as a pre-wash treatment as well. I’ve found these steps to be the fastest and easiest way to clean, condition and style my hair and require minimal manipulation during the week. I tend to use products that are mostly comprised of natural ingredients and provide tons of moisture and slip. This week I tried the entire line by Kinky Tresses, who is one of the sponsors for our #HealthyHair4Summer challenge.
I wanted to work with Kinky Tresses because I have yet to find a staple balanced natural protein conditioner. In the past, my favorites have been ApHogee 2 Minute Reconstructor, Joico K-Pak Hydrator, and ORS Replenishing Pak – none of which are natural ingredient based. I also tried Aubrey Organics GPB conditioner and found it to be just okay…I wasn’t floored with the results. And of course, I do have a preference for supporting Black owned business as well.
As you can see from the video, the shampoo lathers great and I love how soft but strong the conditioner left my hair. The stars of the show, however are the leave-in and butter. I’ve used them multiple times on my hair and my two-year old nephew’s hair while on vacation. I love that both these products are thick enough to keep my hair moisturized while spending the day in the hot sun. I did find using all five products together is totally not necessary however. Because they are all oil-based products, the oil rinse plus leave-in and hair butter left my hair super soft but feeling kind of greasy. Therefore, I tend to use the butter to twist after washing and the leave-in when moisturizing during the week to retwist, but usually not both together.
The products don’t give any “hold” but I still get great definition from my twist outs using Kinky Tresses. Also, because these products are more oil-based moisturizers I don’t need to apply a separate oil when doing the LOC method to style.
Due to the lack of “hold” (sorry to keep using that word but I can’t think of a better one) I’m able to achieve “big hair” on my first day without having to do a lot of separating or fluffing and my hair stays soft all day.
I promise, I’m gonna do something other than a twist out soon! Anyway, these products are available at kinkytresses.com and if you are looking for an affordable, natural ingredient based line that is Black owned check out Kinky Tresses!
