I’ve been so lax in doing my hair while transitioning! It’s just so much easier to leave it alone under wigs and weaves. I’m not lacking in creativity or inspiration….just time and motivation to tackle the task! But this week, I shook off the funk of laziness and created a pretty bomb updo (if I do say so myself!) that is perfect not only for transitioners, but ladies with any hair type or texture! I was inspired by the beautiful Janelle Monae.
My wash day routine will be posted this week for more details, but for this (and almost all of my) transitioning hairstyles, I began with stretched hair – in this case blow dried. This is to help prevent tangles at the line of demarcation, but you can totally do this on wet hair without using direct heat. All you will need is two packs of marley/cuban twist hair, one each 16 and 12 inch packs. In the back I used Femi Marley Braid and in the front, I used Equal Cuban Twist hair. This is a super easy, almost foolproof style – even the styling challenged can do it! Check out the tutorial below:
Like I said in the video, you can totally do this entire style using your own hair – twisting it in the back and leaving hair out in the front, but I wanted a complete protective style that required barely any maintenance. Also, by using marley hair, it gives relaxed ladies a chance to have a the look of “natural” hair without having to actually transition. I am getting lots of compliments and have to admit, I feel pretty doggone flyy myself!
If you happen to recreate this style, I’d love if you share your ‘do with me by tagging me (@EbonyCPrincess) or the blog (@Longing4Length) on Instagram. Or you can simply upload in the comment section below! Happy Hair Growing!
